The words “Portland” and “food cart” pretty much go hand in hand. The Rose City has long been at the forefront of the mobile food scene, and today Portland is home to more than 400 food carts. In other words, food carts are serious business around these parts.
While we all love the ease and cost associated with food trucks, “healthy” isn’t often a word that comes to mind for those familiar with the scene. In fact, some of the best food cart grub would make most health-conscious eaters cringe; like Potato Champion’s poutine — twice-fried fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds — or Papa-Pau’s namesake hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with guacamole, mayonnaise, Cheese Whiz and more. Not exactly top choices for those looking to snag a healthy snack.
Nonetheless, Portland’s renowned food cart scene does have its fair share of healthy fare. Here are just a few to try out — and feel good about.
This Portland cart favorite offers one thing and one thing only: a unique, tasty and healthy bowl of brown rice, red and black beans, avocado, black olives, cheddar cheese and Tali sauce. It sounds simple; it tastes anything but.

It’s all things salmon at this seafood cart, which the owner opened in 2012 with a menu full of salmon dishes made with fresh fish he caught himself in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Among the healthier options from a recent sample menu: smoked salmon pita wrap, teriyaki smoked salmon sandwich and smoked salmon tacos. Yum, yum.

There’s also more to healthy food carts than just food. At Sip, the healthy offerings range from fresh juices and green smoothies to vegan milkshakes, tea lattes, steamed juice elixirs and shots of aloe, ginger or wheatgrass. Give it a go, you’ll be back in a hurry.
