What do fruit, chicken and veggies all have in common? They belong to a family of foods that are way more fun when served on a stick.
When I grew up, food on a stick was pretty much limited to Popsicles in the summer and caramel apples in the fall, with maybe some roasted marshmallows and hotdogs at the family reunion.
Recently, however, a ‘food on a stick’ craze has taken us way beyond the jalapeño pops of yesteryear. People everywhere are creating food art out of scrumptious skewers and proving that sticks are not just for the appetizer tray anymore.
In our house, we take food on a stick very seriously. Bamboo sticks are a summer staple, and not just for the barbecue. Of course, we enjoy our kabobs and their tasty cousin, the satay, but lately we’re spearing everything from fruit to sushi.
There’s a lot to like about it. It helps my five-year-old make patterns, encourages us to eat the produce from our backyard and even helps with healthy portion control.
