Places to Ice Skate: 6 Great Rinks in Portland and Seattle

Updated April 4, 2019

Do you dream of spinning and gliding across the ice like a professional figure skater? Maybe instead you want to breakaway and pass like an ice hockey player. Though only the best compete, a little practice can help you skate like a pro. Here in the Northwest, there are many places to lace up your skates and give ice skating a whirl.

Figure skates vs. hockey skates

The boot, blade and shape of hockey and figure skates differ for each sport. Figure skates are designed with a toe pick for jumps and a long, curved blade for spinning. The leather boot gives figure skaters the support and movement they need to perform deep knee bends. Hockey skates are designed for speed, turns and quick stops. The shorter, curved blade makes it hard to spin, but allows hockey players to gain speed and stop quickly. The boots are made out of hard plastic to provide the ankle support hockey players need.

Whether you’re mastering axel jumps or hockey stops, give one of these Northwest skating rinks a try.
